Broadway: From Page to Stage to Screen
This class is a survey of 20th and 21st century Broadway musicals in both their stage forms and their cinematic adaptations. Through video extracts, listenings, textual readings, discussions, debates, games, and other class activities we will explore the origins of the American Broadway musical, its connection to European opera, as well as the stories, music, and socio-cultural contexts of various productions, from Rent and Oklahoma! to Avenue Q and Hamilton, among many others.
