Americana: Myth, Representation, and Identity
Les mythes anciens des cultures grecque, romaine et nordique tendent vers l'épique, l'héroïque, l'extraordinaire. Pourtant, les mythes - grands ou petits, merveilleux ou banals, anciens ou modernes - sont simplement une forme de discours qui projette les croyances et les idéaux d'une culture. Les mythes donnent un sens au monde qui nous entoure et véhiculent un sentiment d'unité culturelle. Les mythes américains - le Far West, Hollywood, l'individualisme, les "muscle cars" de Détroit, le pragmatisme, les affaires, les pères fondateurs et la Constitution, les valeurs WASP, la malbouffe, la "land of oppprtunity", le blues, le jazz et le rock n' roll, entre autres - et leurs diverses représentations (dans la culture populaire notamment) seront au cœur de ce cours.
Americana: Myth, Representation, and Identity
The ancient myths of Greek, Roman, and Nordic cultures tend towards the epic, the heroic, the extraordinary. Yet myths – big or small, wondrous or mundane, ancient or modern – are simply a form of discourse that projects a culture’s beliefs and ideals. Myths give meaning to the surrounding world and convey a sense of cultural unity. American myths – the Wild West, Hollywood, individualism, Detroit muscle cars, pragmatism, business, the founding fathers and the Constitution, WASP values, junk food, the “land of opportunity”, and Blues, Jazz and Rock n’ Roll, among others – and their various representations (in popular culture most notably) will be the focus of this class.
