This course introduces the experimental and theoretical study on the macroscopic behaviors and microscopic mechanisms of multifunctional materials. Particularly, the phenomena of multiphysics coupling and non-linear anisotropic behaviors are demonstrated. There are many applications of the smart materials: actuators, sensors, shock absorbers (dampers), energy harvesters, human biomedical implants, etc. Understanding the relationship between the macroscopic behaviors and the microstructural mechanisms will be helpful in material design/optimization.
