“Multicultural France”
This course introduces the question of multiculturalism in France through the lens of cultural productions (literature, film, documentaries, visual arts). Class topics may include:
- France’s recent colonial history
- Multiculturalism, Secularism and Assimilation
- Orientalism: the representation of “the East” in French culture throughout histoyr
- The banlieue film : The Class, (2008), Girlhood (2015), Divines (2016).
- Migrant and Francophone literatures: Faiza Guène, Leila Sebbar, Alain Mabanckou, etc.
- A museum visit depending on the year’s exhibition program (Musée Marmottan, Musée d’Orsay, Musée du Quai Branly, etc.)
- France’s multicultural territories, such as Marseille and Overseas France
The course will be based on preliminary readings/viewings, group work, oral presentations and seminar discussions.
