“Multicultural France”

This course introduces the question of multiculturalism in France through the lens of cultural productions (literature, film, documentaries, visual arts). Class topics may include:

  • France’s recent colonial history
  • Multiculturalism, Secularism and Assimilation
  • Orientalism: the representation of “the East” in French culture throughout histoyr
  • The banlieue film : The Class, (2008), Girlhood (2015), Divines (2016).
  • Migrant and Francophone literatures: Faiza Guène, Leila Sebbar, Alain Mabanckou, etc.
  • A museum visit depending on the year’s exhibition program (Musée Marmottan, Musée d’Orsay, Musée du Quai Branly, etc.)
  • France’s multicultural territories, such as Marseille and Overseas France

The course will be based on preliminary readings/viewings, group work, oral presentations and seminar discussions.
