The course is an introduction to sustainability concepts and scientific methods for sustainability studies, with a focus on life cycle assessment.
After this course, you should be able to:
- Explain and discuss the major concepts of sustainability and related historical developments
- Select appropriate scientific methods for answering sustainability-related questions
- Explain the concepts of life cycle assessment; understand the results and limitations of life cycle assessment studies; perform simple life cycle calculations
- Critically analyse the sustainability claims made about a specific technology or policy measure
The course is built around 4 lectures and 3 seminars. The grading of the course is built upon attendance and one short individual assignment. There is no final exam. There are no pre-requisite for participating in the course, beside an interest for sustainability.
Overall, the course intends to be useful for the personal development of students, helping students to structure their thinking of sustainability and investigate how their specialisations and career plans can contribute to a more socially just and environmentally safe society.

Students will also explore personal topics like finding universities and programs that fit their aspirations and needs, as well as developping their networking skills and social media presence.
