Contrairement aux idées reçues, la science-fiction porte moins sur les nouvelles technologies, les planètes lointaines ou les futurs éloignés que ce sur la question : que signifie être humain ? Le genre diffère cependant de la littérature traditionnelle et d’autres genres dans la manière dont il pose cette question dans une perspective imaginaire non- humaine, transhumaine ou posthumaine. En abordant la SF sous cet angle, nous lirons des nouvelles d’Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov et Philip K. Dick. Nous examinerons également des films tels qu’ Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Blade Runner, Alien, Matrix et autres. Ce corpus littéraire et cinématographique sera étudié dans son contexte social et historique, en retraçant les liens entre la science-fiction et la tradition littéraire et artistique occidentale de l'Antiquité au XXe siècle.
Contrary to what many people assume, science fiction is less about new technologies, faraway planets, or the distant future, than about what it means to be human. It differs from mainstream literature and other genres, however, in how it asks this question from an imagined non-human, transhuman, or posthuman perspective. In approaching the genre from this perspective, we will read stories by Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Philip K. Dick. We will also examine films such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Blade Runner, Alien, Matrix, and others. This body of literature and cinema will be placed in its social and historical context, as we trace the links between science fiction and the western literary and artistic tradition from antiquity to the 20th century.
