HSS523 Strategy and geopolitics
Thomas Lindemann, professor of Universities in political science

The end of history, the end of major wars, the "civilization" of global life or the multilateralism victory: these formula has been used to describe the global situation since 1989. However, wether we are reffering to interstate wars (Iraq-Kuwait 1990, Gulf War 1991, Kosovo War 1999, American wars against the Taliban State 2001 and Iraq 2003, Russian war against Georgia 2008, Second Nagorno-Karabakh War 2020, Russia-Ukraine 2022 or Israeli–Palestinian conflicts 2006, 2010, 2014, etc.), internationalized civil violences (Rwanda 1994 or ex-Democratic Republic of the Congo 1994-2003), or terrorist violence (USA 2001, Madrid 2004, London 2005, Paris and Nigeria 2015, Nice 2016, Carcassonne 2018, Conflans 2020), perpetual peace is still far away. If internationalized civil violences vary in term of actors, intensity, issues, objectives and strategies, they often correspond, however, to certain shared logics of the new international system. conflictuality can vary depending on the power balance between actors, their level of independence, the socioeconomical disparities and the compatibility of their political regime, their perceptions and values, the level of "symbolic violence", or damage the image and self-esteem. According to the latter, contemporary conflicts are often struggle for recognition.
