Sociology of the political arena

Who are the elected representatives, and why do they differ from the general public? Who do we vote for, and why? Do campaigns have an effect on a voter choice? What, and more importantly, for whom are opinion polls used? What is the place of minorities in politics?
Starting with classic questions, this seminar offers an introduction to contemporary politics. It demonstrates the interest of sociological analysis to understand the forms and actors of politics, past and present.
An overview of classic and current works on politics, this seminar is also intended to be a first approach to social science research. Through discussions relatives to the teacher's current study, which for several years has included a study of the National Assembly.
Through a mini-survey collectively conducted over the course of the semester on a subject of interest, which will enable to put into practice the reasoning studied, as well as getting into certain methods, including observation, interviews, different types of statistics and the analysis of secondary sources.

Evaluation: Attendance and participation in a collective survey and writing of part of the final essay.
This course is validated according to the following complementary ways:
- Class attendance and participation (~20%)
- Participation in the collective survey and writing of a commentary (~80%)
- The main part of the validation will consist of participation in the collective survey, and the writing of a note putting into perspective the main results obtained by the student (or group) during the survey.
