The seminar From Baroque to Rock aims to give students a broad auditory heritage and encourage them to think about music as an integral part of a cultural and sociological whole.
It offers to deepen students' knowledge of the great classics of Western music, but also provides an opportunity to venture into more unfamiliar territory, exploring less familiar works and styles of music.
The seminar is aimed not only at students already equipped with a solid musical culture, but at all those whose curious ears would eventually like to recognize to which great period or current in the history of music a work belongs. It will cover four centuries of music - scholarly and popular, from here and elsewhere -, and will present the theoretical and aesthetic stakes that presided over the formation of the major musical genres, and tackle the most remarkable that illustrate them.
Whether discovery or exploration, work during the seminar will be above all concrete and practical, based on dialogue and participation: it will give commented audition of excerpts, of which the analysis and understanding will be placed in the historical, artistic and cultural context of the period considered.
Participation in one or two concerts is required.
