This course is an introduction to the biomimetic or bioinspired approach. This approach consists in solving engineering problems by identifying and adapting solutions existing in the living systems. The course will focus on mechanical engineering; it will rely on exploring the tree of life and reviewing the main advances of biomimetics over the last few years. The course combines lectures, seminars, case studies, and work on a project in small groups.
Examples of cases studied and of projects :
- Shock absorbers inspired by fruit envelopes
- Axisless joints inspired by the Strelitzia plant
- Jellyfish-inspired propulsion
- East Gate Center Harare building, Zimbabwe, inspired by the termite mound
- Chitin as an integrated wrapping
- Use of 3D printing in connection with biomimetics
