Broadway: From Page to Stage to Screen

This class is a survey of 20th and 21st century Broadway musicals, mostly (but not exclusively) seen via their cinematic adaptations. Through video extracts, listenings, textual readings, discussions, debates, games, and other class activities we will explore the origins of the American Broadway musical, its connection to European opera, as well as the stories, music, and socio-cultural contexts of various productions, from An American in Paris and Oklahoma! to Avenue Q and Hamilton (many others in between).
