The course is divided in 2 main parts.
The first part entitled “Introduction to imaging” aims to provide students with basic knowledge in the field of imaging for the study of fundamental processes in biology and for biomedical diagnostics. An overview of the main imaging techniques currently in use for these applications is provided.
The basic physical principles of imaging are introduced. Moreover the main physical processes which determine the tissue-light interaction (dispersion, scattering and absorption) are illustrated. Finally the computational methods enabling to use images to solve a larger biomedical problem through image processing, image analysis and downstream data analysis are introduced.
The second part, entitled "Biomaterials", aims to provide students with basic knowledge in the field of biomaterials and tissue engineering, focusing on the strengths and limits of the existing systems, as well as on the future developments. The basic concepts of drug delivery are also illustrated. In particular, the advantages, drawbacks and limits of some examples of oral, transdermal and topical drug delivery systems are presented. The domain of nanomedicine will be also introduced with focus on the description of innovative systems for nanodiagnostics and nanotherapeutics. Finally, some examples of clinical and industrial developments (drug coated stents, scaffolds, cardiac valves, nano/micro systems for imaging, etc.) are introduced and discussed.
