Les sciences ont-elles une histoire ? Souvent célébrées pour leur universalité, les sciences peuvent sembler intemporelles. Pourtant les savoirs scientifiques et technologiques sont élaborés par des hommes et des femmes ; ils évoluent dans des temps et des espaces sociaux en interactions avec d'autres activités culturelles, sociales, économiques etc.
Le séminaire a pour objectif de développer un regard réflexif sur les sciences tout en proposant une initiation à la recherche en histoire des sciences. La présentation de grandes thématiques de la recherche contemporaine permettra de découvrir la richesse d'approches fortement interdisciplinaires mêlant notamment histoire, philosophie et sociologie.
Les projets de recherches sur les collections historiques de l'École
Afin de permettre à chaque élève d'approfondir ses propres centres d'intérêts (science ou technique particulière, période historique ou thématique spécifique), le séminaire donne l'occasion de développer des projets personnels ou collectifs à partir des collections patrimoniales de l'École polytechnique.
Ce fond, unique en son genre, inclut des instruments, ouvrages rares, manuscrits, photographies, dessins et gravures du XVe siècle à nos jours. Il permet d'élaborer des travaux originaux qui pourront être valorisés sous la forme de publications, de films documentaire ou encore de dispositifs scénographiques pour des expositions. La grande richesse de ces collections permet également une grande variété de thématiques de recherches tant du point de vue des champs scientifiques que d'objets technologiques ou d'autres domaines comme les arts, la philosophie, la littérature etc.
Lors des deux premières séances, chaque élève sera guidé dans le choix du thème de son projet. Le séminaire alternera alors entre séances de cours en PC et séances de travail collectif au Centre de ressources historiques de la BCX où les collections historiques de l'École seront à la disposition des élèves.
Do sciences have a history? Often celebrated for their universality, the sciences can seem timeless. Yet scientific and technological knowledge is developed by men and women; they evolve in social times and spaces, interacting with other cultural, social, economic activities etc.
The seminar aims to develop a reflective approach to sciences while providing an introduction to research in the history of sciences. The presentation of major themes in contemporary research will enable the discovery of the richness of highly interdisciplinary approaches, particularly implicating history, philosophy, and sociology.
Research projects on the École's historical collections
In order to enable each student to deepen their own interests (a particular science or technique, historical period or specific theme), the seminar gives an opportunity to develop personal or group projects from the École Polytechnique's heritage collections.
It includes instruments, rare works, manuscripts, photographs, drawings and engravings from the 15th century to the present day. It enables us to elaborate original works whose value can be increased in the form of publications, documentary films or scenographic displays for exhibitions. The great richness of these collections also allows for a wide variety of research themes, from the point of view of scientific fields and technological objects, to other fields such as the arts, philosophy, literature and so on.
During the first two sessions, each student will be guided in the choice of a project theme. The seminar will then alternate between PC classes and group work sessions at the BCX Historical Resource Center where the École's historical collections will be available to students.
