Cette proposition de stages offre le choix entre deux types d'activités distinctes : 1) recherches en histoire des sciences ; 2) travaux d'ingénierie sur les outils informatiques utilisés en sciences sociales.
1) En tant que champ de recherche, l'histoire des sciences présente un caractère fortement interdisciplinaire, intégrant notamment de nombreuses approches d'histoire générale, de philosophie, de sociologie ou encore des études littéraires. Ce champ permet ainsi non seulement de penser les sciences et les techniques mais aussi d'acquérir des outils d'analyse des défis sociétaux que pose le monde contemporain et ses évolutions futures.
Cette offre de stage donne l'occasion à chaque élève de mener des travaux correspondant à ses propres intérêts (domaine scientifique particulier, période historique, enjeux etc.). Ces travaux s'appuieront sur les fonds d'archives de l'École. La richesse de ces fonds d'archives offre une grande variété de thématiques de recherches, tant du point de vue des champs scientifiques et technologiques que d'objets technologiques ou d'autres domaines comme les arts, la philosophie, les entreprises etc.
Afin de valoriser ces productions, le sujet du stage sera élaboré avec chaque élève non seulement en fonction de ses intérêts mais aussi en relation avec des thèmes porteurs de la recherche contemporaine en histoire des sciences (projets jeunes chercheurs, thèses en cours, réseaux internationaux, équipes de recherches régionales etc.)
Le stage aura lieu en partie au Centre historique de l'École pour les travaux d'archives. Selon le sujet choisi, il pourra également s'implanter dans un réseau de recherche thématique international ou dans un laboratoire d'histoire des science (Équipe "histoire des sciences mathématiques" de l'Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu, Centre Koyré de l'EHESS, GHDSO de l'Université Paris-Sud 11, UMR SPHERE de l'Université Paris-7, UMR STL de l'Université Lille 1, Archives Henri Poincaré à Nancy, etc.)
A titre d'exemples de sujets possibles, citons, entre autres :
- Histoire des mathématiques, en relation avec le projet international jeunes chercheurs CaaFÉ (http://caafe.math.cnrs.fr )
- Science et littérature aux XIXe et XXe siècle, en relation avec le projet international jeunes chercheurs "Histoire croisée"
- Constitution d'archives audiovisuelles des acteurs contemporains de l'École (enseignants, chercheurs, élèves, etc.)
- Biographie scientifique
- Le journal de l'École polytechnique, en relation avec le projet international sur l'histoire de la presse scientifique
- Les correspondances scientifiques : étude et numérisation d'un fond d'archive
- Les contributions des polytechniciens à la géométrie, la cristallographie et la cinématique au XIXe siècle, en relation avec trois thèses en cours (Brésil, Canada, France)
- Machines et instruments dans les archives de l'École
Selon le thème choisi, le stage pourra donner lieu à différents types de productions :
- publication (journaux et/ou sites internet)
- exposition
- constitution / valorisation d'archives (en participant notamment au Musée virtuel de l'École)
- film documentaire
- etc.
2) Les élèves qui le souhaitent pourront choisir de mener un projet d'ingénierie sur des outils informatiques utilisés par les chercheurs en histoire des sciences, en lien avec des recherches en cours. Parmi les activités possibles mentionnons :
- interface et contenu du Musée virtuel de l'École
- participation au développement de logiciels pour un projet de numérisation (comme les oeuvres complètes de d'Alembert)
- utilisation de graphes pour la visualisation de réseaux de citations intertextuelles
- problèmes posés par les différents formats bibliographiques
- amélioration des interfaces de programmation des utilisateurs
- développement d'une variante du langage de mysql afin de permettre des requêtes sur les liens entre données et non seulement sur ces données.

This internship offer provides a choice of two distinct types of activity: 1) research in science history; 2) engineering works on computing tools used in social science.
1) As a research field, science history presents is highly interdisciplinary, integrating many approaches to general history, philosophy, sociology or literary studies. This field enables not only to think about science and techniques but also to gain analytical tools of the social challenges of the contemporary world and its future evolutions.
This offer give students the opportunity to conduct works that suit its own interests (specific scientific field, histrorical period, issues, etc.). These works will be based on the fonds of the Ecole. The wealth of these fonds offers a wide range of research theme, as much from the perspective of scientific and technologic fields as technological objects or other fields like arts, philosophy, companies, etc.
In order to value these productions, the subject of the internship will be formulated with each student, according to their interests and related to themes in contemporary research in science history (projects young researchers, current thesis, international network, regional research teams etc.).
The internship will take place in the of the Ecole for the archive works. Depending on the chosen topic, it could also join an international thematic research network or in a laboratory of science history (Team "mathematical science history" of the Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu, Centre Koyré of the EHESS, GHDSO of the Université Paris-Sud 11, UMR SPHERE of the Université Paris-7, UMR STL of the Université Lille 1, Archives Henri Poincaré in Nancy, etc.).
Examples of possible topics:
- Mathematics history, in relation to the international project young reserchers CaaFÉ (http://caafe.math.cnrs.fr )
- Science and literature in the 19th and 20th century, in relation to the international project young reserchers "Histoire croisée"
- Development of an audiovisual archive of the contemporary actors of the Ecole (professors, researcers, students, etc.)
- Scientifical biography
- The paper of the Ecole Polytechnique, in relation to the international project on scientific press history
- Scientific correspondence: study and digitization of a archive fonds
- Polytechnicians contribution to geometry, crystallography and kinematics of the 19th century, in relation to three current thesis (Brazil, Canada, France)
- Machines and instruments in the Ecole's archives
Depending on the chosen topic, the intenship can result in different types of productions
- publication (papers and/or websites)
- exposition
- development / promoting archives (participating to the Virtual museum of the Ecole)
- documentary
- etc.
2) Students can choose to conduct an engineering project on computing tools used by researchers in science history, linked to current researches. Among the activities on offer are:
- interface and content of the Virtual museum of the Ecole
- participation in software development for a digital project (as d'Alembert's complete works)
- use of graphs for the viewing of intertextual citation network
- problems raised by different bibliographic formats
- improvement of user programming interfaces
- development of a variant in order to enable requests based on connections between data and not just on the data itself.
