Les nombres sont aujourd’hui partout : économie, santé, éducation, sport, politique... Peu de sphères de notre existence peuvent prétendre résister au déluge quantitatif contemporain du big data. Mais à quoi servent ces données ? Comment les exploiter de façon raisonnée ? Et comment la place actuelle des chiffres dans notre société s'est-elle construite historiquement ? Les nombres, dans leurs versants statistique et probabiliste, accompagnent en effet depuis plusieurs siècles le développement tant de l'Etat que de la Science.
Ce cours pluridisciplinaire (histoire, anthropologie, sociologie, démographie et statistique) proposera à la fois une approche réflexive des outils, méthodes et raisonnements de la quantification et une mise en pratique sur données réelles, articulée autour des outils de la data science. Un large panorama de techniques avancées et directement opérationnelles d'analyse des données sera ainsi présenté.
Par les questions qu'il pose autant que par les outils statistiques qu'il présente, ce cours constitue une introduction approfondie aux problématiques de la statistique, publique et privée, et des sciences sociales quantitatives.
Numbers are now everywhere: the economy, health, education, sport, politics... Few spheres of our existence can claim to resist the contemporary quantitative deluge of Big Data. But what is the purpose of this data? How can they be used in a reasoned way? And how has the current place of numbers in our society developed historically? Numbers, in their statistical and probabilistic forms, have for centuries accompanied the development of both the State and Science.
This multidisciplinary course (history, anthropology, sociology, demography and statistics) will offer both a reflective approach to the tools, methods and reasoning of quantification and a practical application to real data, based on the tools of data science. A wide range of advanced and directly operational data analysis techniques will be presented.
Through the questions it raises and the statistical tools it presents, this course provides an in-depth introduction to the problems of statistics, both official and private, and quantitative social sciences.
