During this course, we will study the relationships between chemical composition, structure and functional properties in solids, more specifically in iono-covalent oxides. Indeed, these materials play a central role in high technology fields such as conversion and storage of energy, new electronics, aeronautics and many devices involving high working temperature.
After a introduction on perfect crystalline solids (metals, semi-conductors, oxides), we will study the peculiarities of crystalline structures in oxides and the possibility to perform defects engineering. These aspects will be related to physical/chemical properties: electrical properties, transport, thermal diffusivity, ...in relation with specific devices like solid oxide fuel cells, Li-ion batteries, ultrasonic transducers, ...We will also present the main fabrication routes of these devices in forms of thin films, powders, single crystals and the main techniques used to characterise structural and functional properties.
