Have you ever wondered about questions like:
What are the uses of music (political, religious, economic, personal);
• is there such a thing as music for its own sake? Why do you love music?
• what is more important, words or music?
• Is there a real opposition between elitist/art music and popular music?
• Why do you think it is important or of interest to study the music of a given country? Why would it be especially for France? Do you have any insights on whether the music of your own country has been used in one or another of the ways described above? How is western music perceived/received in your country?
• Do you think French music is any different from other European cultures? If so, in which way?
The purpose of this course is to show you in which ways it differs and how it has indeed been used in different centuries for different purposes.
