Ce cours explorera l'évolution d’un genre littéraire anglo-américain par excellence, la fantasy, et les écrits de son plus grand praticien moderne, JRR Tolkien. Nous allons d'abord étudier les racines de fantasy dans les contes de fées celtiques, les sagas nordiques, les romans arthuriens et le poème épique Beowulf, considéré comme le premier chef-d'œuvre de la littérature anglaise. Nous allons ensuite nous concentrer sur deux œuvres majeures de Tolkien: The Hobbit et The Lord of the Rings. Les auteurs de fantasy plus récents seront également évoqués.

This course will explore the evolution of a quintessentially Anglo-American literary genre, fantasy, and the writings of its greatest modern practitioner, J.R.R. Tolkien. We will first study the roots of heroic fantasy in Celtic fairy tales, Norse sagas, Arthurian romance and the epic poem Beowulf, widely considered as the first masterpiece of English literature. We will then concentrate on Tolkien’s two major works: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. More recent writers of fantasy influenced by Tolkien will also be discussed.
